Let's Learn Civics - Youth Voting Rights
Did you know young people can pre-register to vote in North Carolina? That's right, they can! Continuing our series to Learn Civics together, we're looking at voting rights and registration logistics right here in the Tarheel state. Most folks know that you must be 18 years of age to register to vote in NC. But there's also a pre-registration practice that allows 16 and 17 year old residents to pre-register! By pre-registering, a young person's voter registration is automatically processed on their 18th birthday. In fact, pre-registering 16 to 17 year olds can be an effective way to increase civic participation among young folks as they come of age in an era when fewer high schoolers choose to get a driver's license. The delay in obtaining a driver's license has caused some eligible voters to also delay getting registered to vote. And we know that young people aren't always included in civics education, so pre-registering voters can help bring civic participation into focus and into reach for future NC voters. Save and share this information with parents and young folks in your network! When we all vote, we all have a say in how the future looks.
