Civic Impact Academy Featured in Sistah Magazine: Redefining Local Leadership

Our mission to build a seat at the table for Charlotte residents has made the news. Here is a look at our recent spotlight and how we are bridging the gap between community members and public sector professionals.

Building a Seat at the Table: How the Civic Impact Academy is Redefining Civic Leadership in Charlotte

Charlotte is growing at lightning speed. New developments, shifting neighborhoods, and expanding infrastructure are transforming the city daily. But amid this rapid growth, a critical question remains: Who actually gets to shape what comes next?

For too long, the people most impacted by local government decisions haven't had a seat at the table. Civic engagement strategist Christine Edwards Pitkin is out to change that.

The Vision Behind the Academy

Founded by Edwards Pitkin, the Civic Impact Academy is a groundbreaking 12-week leadership program designed to bridge the gap between the community and the public sector. By bringing passionate residents and government professionals into the same room, the academy fosters an environment where they can learn, collaborate, and solve real community challenges together.

The inspiration for the program came from a frustrating, yet all-too-common observation Edwards Pitkin made throughout her career in civic engagement.

"The residents most affected by public decisions were almost never in the rooms where those decisions were made," Edwards Pitkin explains.

"I kept watching brilliant residents—most of them Black and Brown women—show up with lived expertise that exceeded anything in the room, only to be talked over by people with credentials and no proximity."

Turning Everyday Residents into Civic Leaders

The Civic Impact Academy was built to flip this dynamic. It isn't just about teaching people how local government works; it’s about empowering them to actively participate in it and demand accountability.

The ultimate goal? To turn everyday residents into informed, highly effective civic leaders while simultaneously helping public institutions build stronger, more authentic trust with the communities they are sworn to serve.

During the 12-week program, participants are equipped with the tools they need to make their voices heard. They receive civic leadership training, valuable mentorship, and advocacy skills. Perhaps most importantly, they work on a "Community Design Challenge" action plan, ensuring that the work they do creates tangible, real-world impact far beyond the walls of the classroom.

How You Can Get Involved

If you've ever wanted to make a difference in your neighborhood but didn't know where to start, this is your opportunity. You don't need a background in politics to apply—you just need a passion for your community.
